A Sandwich is a show-off?

Are you a hotdog.? Are you hotdogging?

You probably know that hotdog is a type of American sandwich (🌭). But did you know that hotdog is an American slang word for a show off, someone who is skilled but calls attention to his or her skills unnecessarily. Athletes in skiing, basketball, surfing and baseball, for example, sometimes do this to entertain the crowd or to inspire teammates.

Or sometimes to “gloat.”

To hotdog is the verb: “Look at him hotdog on that catch.” [Baseball] Hotdogging is acting like a hotdog.

This slang can be applied to school, social, and business activities. Generally, speaking, hotdogging is considered to be unbecoming because true talent does not need adornment. On the other hand, doing something with style can be entertaining. So the difference between an athlete or expert with style and a hotdog is “in the eye of the beholder.” That is, it depends on your perception at the time.

Do you dig? This word is slang for understand and is associated with social informality and, for me, jazz, the blues and rock-and-roll –– three music genres that originated in America. Here’s what etymoline.com says about dig as meaning understand:
